Before we share the details of our Analogue London photo walk, let’s get to know more about the photography guide who will be accompanying you on our analogue photo walk of The Big Smoke.

Michael Rankin

A FUJIFILM House of Photography specialist, Michael Rankin, has strong experience and technical of analogue film photography.  Michael’s freelance work focuses strongly on the analogue style and aesthetic of photography, with his photography spanning genres from documentary to fashion & weddings. Inspiration for his photography comes from travel, different cultures and colours.

Michael is really keen to share his tips for shooting analogue film and how slowing down your photography can help you to get the best out of your photo walk and photography skills!

What can you expect from this workshop?

This analogue photo walk is aimed at photography beginners and enthusiasts, though those who want to improve their skills and gain learnings shooting with analogue cameras and film and enjoy a day out with our photography community!

With a lot of freedom to work at your own pace, Michael will help you navigate your way around and help you produce great images. There is less focus on in-depth tuition and genre theory, however, you do have the opportunity to talk directly to Michael who will be able to answer your specific photography queries and share tips and techniques for getting the perfect shot.

You will be provided with a choice of a roll of either Fujifilm 200 or Fujifilm 400 35mm film for the photo walk. This will include developing and digital scanning of your film as well as print copies of your images (available three working days after the photo walk).

This walk will take in some of the most iconic parts of London, including along the River Thames, Westminster and St James Park before heading to back through Soho to the FUJIFILM House Of Photography close the photo walk.

 

Itinerary for the day

Note: Please aim to arrive 15 minutes before your session time.

11:30 – 12:30

Meet at the House of Photography for introductions and a Health and Safety Briefing followed by an introduction to 35mm film photography and our photo walk route.

12:30-16:30

Leave the House of Photography and start the route. Some of the iconic locations we may cover include: Soho, China Town, Trafalgar Square, Embankment, Southbank, River Thames, Westminster, Parliament Square & St James Park.

16:30-17:00

Arrive back at the House of Photography for a debrief and hand out of film processing forms.

For those wishing to stay overnight, there are plenty of hotels in the area. The nearest car park is the Qpark in Chinatown, located on Newport Place, London, WC2H 7PU.

 

What will you learn?

After an initial refresh on the analogue basics including film choice and camera settings. Michael will move on to explain valuable exposure techniques — including exposure settings for film, how to meter correctly for scenes with highlights and shadows.

Michael will promote the act of ‘slowing down’ and how to take in the surroundings to take the best photographs possible. As ever, light and exposure are extremely crucial when photographing using 35mm film. You will receive due time and attention as the day progresses and opportunities to ask the questions of your choice.

 
 
What kit do you need?

You will need to bring your own 35mm camera, these will NOT be provided by our team. You will be provided with a choice of a roll of either Fujifilm 200 or Fujifilm 400 35mm film for the photo walk. This will include developing and digital scanning of your film as well as print copies of your images (available three working days after the photo walk).

Photographers travelling lighter are also welcome to borrow 3LeggedThing tripods.

As the UK weather is so unpredictable, be sure to pack weather-appropriate clothing, wear comfortable shoes, and take a bottle of water and snacks to keep you going. Though we will have a designated break time to rest, catch up and reset, there will be a lot of walking and time spent outside.

 

Activity and mobility requirements for attendees

This photo walk around London is suited for photographers with a moderate activity level. All locations are only a short walk within London City Centre, however, there are some areas that might not be fully wheelchair accessible.

 

First aid

Your photo walk leaders are fully First Aid Trained for outdoor activities and will always carry a full Outdoors First Aid kit.

Tickets do not include any expenses, train fares, meals, taxi fares, parking charges, etc unless otherwise stated. Please aim to arrive 15 minutes before your session time.

 

Terms & Conditions

Once you have purchased a ticket, your place on the day will be reserved. If circumstances change and you need to cancel your place, please let us know 10 working days before the event and we will be happy to issue you a refund in full. Places cancelled after this time are non-refundable. You need to be at least 18 years of age in order to take part in this event and a disclaimer form will need to be completed on the day in order to take part in the day’s activity.
