Emmy-winning director and cinematographer Tom Martienssen has filmed in over 50 countries and territories from Afghanistan to the Arctic to the Himalayas to the Pacific Islands.
His passion for storytelling began when he was working as combat search and rescue in Afghanistan. While at the BBC, he survived and subsequently covered the 2015 earthquake in Nepal and worked undercover in the Middle East to report on ISIS.
Over the last decade Martienssen has turned his lens to capturing the topics of conservation in Nigeria, poaching of the Black Rhino in Kenya, and documenting culture in global Indigenous communities.
This year Martienssen feature length documentary ‘Rhino’ releases to the public, documenting the conservation efforts of rangers and local communities against poaching in Kenya.
‘The Light We Don’t See’, gives us a glimpse into the making of the film and the importance of photo and video journalism on these often-overlooked subjects.
We invite you to explore the photography of Martienssen, through his lens, in never-before-seen images that capture the determination, resilience and passion of those working to rebuild and protect the Black Rhino population in Kenya.
