Macro lenses have a long-standing image as deeply specialised tools. In part, for good reason. Not just any optic provides 1:1 magnification – but a product that does shouldn’t have to serve such a singular purpose, either. The very best of macro glass remains versatile across a broader range of subjects. XF30mmF2.8 R LM WR Macro may just top them all.

With a full-fame equivalent focal length of 46mm, X Series’ new addition can be seen as a standard prime with a huge plus. Not only does the APS-C sensor’s crop factor extend the reach of the lens, but it increases macro scale, too. Photographic subjects appear 1.5x larger on the sensor than their real-life counterparts. To offer some perspective, any detail from 1.2cm from the lens element to infinity can be documented. That’s a whole world of creation.

Yet, XF30mmF2.8 doesn’t stop there. To the benefit of image makers working in all conditions, the lens is dust and moisture resistant, and capable of withstanding temperatures as low as -10°C. There’s also it’s linear motor design to consider. It drives an Inner Focus system, resulting in autofocus acquisition in as little as 0.02 seconds. While this typically means a bulkier lens, this optic remains a highly compact 69.5mm, weighing just 195g.

Finally, serving as the perfect companion for latest high-resolution bodies from X Series, XF30mmF2.8 exemplifies optical precision. Various forms of aberration are minimised, leaving only fine images, thanks to the design of 11 elements in nine groups – including three aspherical elements and two ED elements. Flattering portraits, scenic landscapes, bustling street scenes and more are all well within the capabilities of the macro lens. But proceed with caution: you may never want to put it down.
