Overview of the Edinburgh photowalk

This photo walk is aimed at photography beginners and enthusiasts, though those who want to test out the range of equipment or enjoy a day out with our photography community are more than welcome!

With a lot of freedom to work at your own pace, Carol will help you navigate your way around and help you produce great images. There is less focus on in-depth tuition and genre theory, however, you do have the opportunity to talk directly to Carol who will be able to answer your specific photography queries.

Edinburgh is rich in history, laden with fine architecture and heaving with character. There’s boundless opportunity to create evocative imagery at any time of the day – and there’s no better way to drink it all in than with like-minded photographers. During this photo walk, you’ll see some of the city’s most iconic locations, all of which lie in the shadow of the magnificent castle, sat high on its volcanic perch and learn to take photos from a different perspective.

Who will be joining you?

Carol Hartfree

Carol got her first SLR in her early 20s and has been obsessed with photography since. With a degree in photography and many years of working as a freelance photographer and trainer, she has gained a great deal of technical and creative knowledge.

Known for her kind, gentle approach to her subject matter, Carol’s work has been described as ‘photography with a light touch'. This extends to her teaching, helping students to get the most out of their equipment and realise their creative vision, whatever their skill level or experience.

What will you learn?

After an initial refresh on basic camera settings, Carol will move on to explain valuable exposure techniques — including exposure settings, composition, and how to manipulate the highlights and shadows.

These will include tips for street photography, black and white photography, composition, and how to anticipate a compelling story to freeze the moment in time.

As ever, light and exposure are crucial, so they will receive due time and attention as the day progresses. You’ll receive different photo briefs throughout the day to help you experiment with camera settings and photographic techniques.
